Did You Know?

Shenmue originally began development as a Virtua Fighter RPG starring Akira Yuki before evolving into Ryo Hazuki’s quest for revenge.

Game Overview

Released for the Dreamcast in 1999, Shenmue is an action-adventure game created by Yu Suzuki and widely regarded as one of SEGA’s most ambitious projects. Combining cinematic storytelling with open-world exploration, it pushed the Dreamcast hardware to its limits and helped pioneer many features that would later become standard in modern gaming.

The story follows Ryo Hazuki, a young martial artist who witnesses the murder of his father at the hands of a mysterious man named Lan Di. Determined to uncover the truth and seek revenge, Ryo begins a journey through the streets of Yokosuka, Japan, gathering clues and meeting a diverse cast of characters.

Shenmue was revolutionary for its time, featuring a living world with dynamic weather, day-and-night cycles, fully voiced dialogue, interactive environments and NPCs that followed their own daily routines. The game also introduced Quick Time Events, which would go on to influence countless titles in the years that followed.

Although its development costs were among the highest in gaming at the time, Shenmue received widespread praise for its ambition, attention to detail and immersive atmosphere. Today it is considered a cult classic and remains one of the Dreamcast’s most iconic and influential games.

No historical magazine reviews have been added for this game yet.

SEGA Universe ratings are built from the review sources available for each game.

Community reviews are submitted by SEGA Universe members and use a 5-star rating system.

SEGA Universe reviews are editorial reviews written specifically for the site and may contribute to a game’s overall score.

For games originally released on classic SEGA platforms such as the Master System, Mega Drive (Genesis), Saturn and Dreamcast, historical magazine reviews may be used to provide contemporary critic scores from the time of release. These scores are normalised to a 100-point scale before being included in the rating.

For newer releases, Metacritic scores may be used when historical critic reviews are not available.

Not every game uses the same review sources. Some games may only have community reviews, while others combine community reviews, SEGA Universe reviews and critic scores.

Each available review source contributes equally to the final rating.
