Sonic Adventure 2 is the 2001 Dreamcast sequel developed by Sonic Team and Sonic Team USA, released as Sonicâs 10th anniversary title. It drops the Adventure Fields from the first Sonic Adventure and instead moves through a faster sequence of Hero and Dark story stages, switching between Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Dr. Eggman and Rouge.
Rather than simply repeating the first game, it narrows the design around three paired play styles: high-speed Sonic and Shadow stages, shooting stages for Tails and Eggman, and treasure-hunting stages for Knuckles and Rouge. It also expands the Chao system, adds more structured mission replay, includes 180 Emblems to chase and makes grinding a major part of Sonicâs 3D moveset.
As the final original Sonic platformer released on Sega hardware, the Dreamcast version has a very specific place in SEGA history. Later versions would revise and repackage the game as Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and the 2012 downloadable release, but the original Dreamcast edition is the version tied to Sonicâs 10th anniversary, the Birthday Pack, VMU features and the end of Segaâs console era.
